This project sits on the outskirts of a quickly developing HOA 'design guidelined' subdivision in Willits, Colorado. Fortunately, this specific lot has very few design limitations, and can take full advantage of the vast sweeping views that exist in the Roaring Fork Valley; tucked into the Rocky Mountains.
The main goal of this development project is to take full advantage of the views towards Basalt Mountain nearby, as well as capturing the picturesque vignette of Mt. Sopris in the distance. The parti in mind is to use the garage and the service areas to create a bit of privacy from the existing structures, and create wide open living/gathering areas that open to the south to capture the sun and the views.

Initial parti sketches showing the direction of the southern sun, as well as the outward views towards the mountains nearby.
The open stairs lead to the upper level, which utilizes the northern, more private wall as circulation - while the 2 guest rooms and master suite enjoy a sloping ceiling to the southern views. The master bedroom has a roof deck that is half pavers/half natural grasses and planters.

early schematic rendering of the open staircase.
The lower level consists of an open partial basement as well as mechanical room, etc. Materials studies have leaned towards using a white stucco over a portion of the structure, with a neutral or dark grey cedar or similar covering the rest.

Steel and wood trellis off of the 2nd level add protection for the open spaces off the dining / living spaces.
